Trump the wall

a short story on how to trump the wall

Each day walls collapse somewhere on the planet when a tornado or earthquake strikes. Each day computer firewalls are breached and information is leaked to the outside.

Building a wall is a stopgap measure to keep that was is being feared outside, at the expense of huge building costs, maintenance, and surveillance, at the expense of a false sense of safety and security, at the expense of personal freedom and liberty to all…

Building walls isn't the proper solution to permanently deal with the inevitable. The inevitable is the fact that the world is getting smaller and smaller and more populated each and every day; The inevitable, being the aspirations of people on a better future for themselves, their children and their community…

Building walls is never the proper solution to problems that we've created ourselves in the first place. People don't flee their homes, their places of birth for no good reason. People don't risk their lives in breaching those walls without proper cause…

WE HAVE TO COME UP WITH A BETTER SOLUTION. A SOLUTION NOT BASED ON FEAR, PREJUDICE, MIS- AND DISINFORMATION OR IGNORANCE…

If any wall is to be built, it should encompass all of humanity, it should be built on trust, honesty, transparency, and equality.

THIS GREAT WALL OF TRUST, SHOULD BE ALL-INCLUSIVE, DEVOID OF GREED, VANITY, POWER HUNGER, AND SELF INTEREST.

Let's sit around the table, discuss the issues, fair and square.
Are your problems really that much different from mine?
Are my issues really that more important than yours?
Am I right and are you wrong?

I don't think so…

We are all in the same boat. We are all citizens of planet Earth. The challenges we face in our individual lives may differ, but collectively we share the same basic rights, obligations, hopes, and dreams.

Hey, let me see if I can help you with your problem… and maybe you can help me with mine.

It's all very basic, very simple, very humble…

LET'S RID OURSELVES OF ALL THE CONFUSION…

We can trump the wall of fear and confusion by starting to rebuild the wall of trust -which has been steadily deteriorating- by applying our God-given qualities, skills, intelligence, and compassion, on a daily basis, in our personal lives and in our relationships with our fellow citizens.

There's no need for big new deals, promises of hope and change, hollow 'Yes-we-cans', if we fail to live up to those on th individual level. Yet, history shows us, history tells us those stories about Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, JFK, and Rosa Parks.

So yes, we need those stories for they convey messages to us. Examples delivered by exemplary people who set new standards, who set the record straight on matters that involve us all.

But we, you, me, myself and I, have to be willing to apply those standards, set our own records straight, first and foremost, before we start blaming others for being the cause of our problems, for letting us down…

LET'S EMBRACE THE UNKNOWN INSTEAD OF LOCKING OURSELVES UP BEHIND WALLS IN A VAIN ATTEMPT TO LOCK THE UNKNOWN OUT

The unknown may be sitting as a stranger on the same bus you are in. While you may be thinking: "who is this idiot staring at me…" it is this very moment where our fear and distrust kicks in and it this very moment where we have to combat it. How? By thinking and acting differently: "Hello Sir, how are you doing? Nice day, today, isn't it?"

Basic human decency, friendliness, and respect for the unknown… the stranger on the bus, the refugee on a boat, the homeless person sitting on the street asking for a dime…

You may have to walk in their shoes one day. And you know what… they will lift you up, they will help you because they have experienced, they have not forgotten their past and they have learned to act upon a fellow human being who is in need…

THIS IS HOW WE TRUMP THE WALL

To trust, to believe that whatever we do in our personal lives to combat fear, ignorance, and bigotry, will come back to us in one way, shape, form, or another. That we will receive that what we have been giving…

Let us start today to trump the wall of fear and replace it with the wall of trust.
Let us start today and continue to work on it tomorrow…

we like to hear from you
