Girl Town | "Project Girl Town"

EP release
Girl Town | "Project Girl Town" | UbuntuFM Soul Radio

Girl Town is a generational project: father Jeff and daughter M'lissa. Together they have re-worked 5 classics into some very refreshing and new that will have appeal to all generations.

Girl Town is a self-declared father-daughter 'hobby project'. Papa Jeff let his daughter M'lissa sing the songs of his generation. Well, that's a bit of understatement. Together, with the help of producer Jan van der Toorn they have completely re-worked 5 classic Soul, Jazz, and R&B tracks and succeeded in creating very refreshing versions of these well-known classics:

 A Motownesque re-work of Prince's classic hit track "Kiss" without the plump of for instance Tom Jones' cover version;

 A Motown-styled medley of the Supreme's classics "Baby Love", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Stop! (In The Name Of Love) (with a slight oops in the opening bass line  );

 A clear-cut Jazz alt of Benny Carter's classic "The Girl from Ipanema";

 A poppy re-cut of Shalamar's "I Can Make You Feel Good" which breathes new life into the track for the next decade or so;

 A decent cover version of The Four Tops "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)".

According to the bio, this release is a lead-up to their upcoming show "Motown Night". Unfortunately, there is no more info nor social media handles available to find out more about the project.

Girl Town came on our radar with the single releases of "The Girl from Ipanema" and "I Can Make You Feel Good". Now that the EP is out, it leaves us with the question of what the next step will be? This 'hobby project' release is very well made and sincere in its approach. It deserves a follow-up.
