Star Trek Discovery

A brave new world

Star Trek: Discovery is an American television series created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for the streaming service CBS All Access (later rebranded as Paramount+). Launched in 2017, it is the seventh Star Trek series and was the first since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. It begins a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery.

The series is a brave attempt to reboot the original creation by Gene Roddenberry into a new universe. Stripped from the old paradigm that technology will solve all of humanity's problems. This series sets out to re-explore, re-examine, and re-evaluate humanity's core values, that of Star Fleet, and our interpersonal relationships, against the backdrop of a less than perfect universe.

Discovery will have suboptimal appeal to the 'trekkies' that continue to live in the past. It does however offer quality entertainment and appeal to a younger generation, that is open to explore new frontiers.

In a very real sense, we are all aliens on a strange planet. We spend most of our lives reaching out and trying to communicate. If during our whole lifetime, we could reach out and really communicate with just two people, we are indeed very fortunate - Gene Roddenberry
