Roots Reimagined
Caught between the 'bailinhos' of Madeira and the beats of Johannesburg this project takes classics of traditional Portuguese music and places them in a dialogue with Afro-House and Afropop, reflecting the experience of growing up between cultures. What follows is a very interesting and entertaining cross-cultural hybrid that will appeal to many listeners ears.
On his new EP Raízes Reimaginadas, ShAIkh Kev reinterprets classic Portuguese and Madeirense songs through contemporary electronic production, work he describes as cultural maintenance. These songs aren’t museum pieces, they live in gatherings, families, and memories. Reimagining them is a way of keeping them moving.
