Mike Casey’s sax shines like a fiery torch in the darkness

While the law of attraction lacks scientific evidence for its claims and is generally viewed as a pseudoscience, if there is such a thing as the law of attraction, then one of its traits must be the attraction to good music. At least, that would explain how we were drawn in by Mike Casey’s "Law Of Attraction". Casey's sax shines like a fiery torch in the darkness on every track.

The recently-released sophomore album Tempestuoso (Lulaworld Records), from Toronto group Tio Chorinho, is 10 tracks of new and classic Brazilian choro music, bursting with spirit and soul, and featuring a tour de force appearance by powerhouse vocalist Flavia Nascimento.

A love story

Jazz Is Dead is a global movement experienced through community and culture. They travel the world searching for rare records and the artists who created them, digging through the crates for the music and stories that capture our imagination and unite us, with a passion that is driven by honouring the legacies of these musical heroes through live concerts, visual media and new analog recordings.

Reflections on a Jazz revelation

Amy’s music is personal to the extreme. She lived the life she expressed in her songs. Her inner eye recorded all her feelings and emotions which she put into poetry, and the lyrics of her songs. Jazz was the vehicle, the means, the meme, to carry and translate the subtleties of her thoughts and feelings into music. It could only have been Jazz. No other genre could have encompassed her talent and creativity.

So do  Simon Toldam and Peter Bruun that accompanied her on this journey. Honesty, sincerity, purity, and integrity come to mind when we listen to the album and reflect thereof on our own state of being and that of the world.

Wanderlust

Fernweh, a German word for 'wanderlust' that means specifically to be homesick for a place you've never been, is the perfect name for Marbin's 12th album, which focuses exclusively on jazz standards.

A wake-up call

A brilliant single and video release. The singing, coordinated with the creative video is superb. The subtitles make it all the more interesting for people who do not speak the local language. Hope against a backdrop of social injustice

'Stimela' (Coal Train) is the track that Hugh Masekela will probably be best remembered for as it encompasses all of his work both lyrically and musically. Such is the significance of 'Stimela' as it addresses the theme of hope against a backdrop of social injustice, central to South African modern history, a history still marked by decades of 'apartheid'.

'Desert Orchid' paints a beautiful and delicate musical picture of the American southwest - the landscape, plant life, the verandas, and rugged people who live artfully amongst nature’s often hostile terrain.  Plateaus in the distance, the thousands of miles of blowing sand, the harsh morning light, the grace and pastoral beauty of late afternoon is encased in one, lone Desert Orchid".
